Virus Randy Piper's Animal
Virus
Locomotive Records

Randy Piper used to play guitar for W.A.S.P. in the first two albums, the other axe-man, the blonde one, was Chris Holmes, and after leaving the band followed a solo career. This one is the second album for the Animal outfit, with “Violent New Breed” having preceded in 2005. The sound of the band surely will remind you of W.A.S.P. in the ‘80s, while Randy managed to get a singer pretty close to Blackie Lawless’ voice. There are some moments where you’ll ask yourself whether you are listening to outtakes from “The Last Command”, although Rich Lewis's voice is grainy, but warmer than Blackie’s.

The album is pretty good with 9 high caliber compositions, and a killer cover of “Zombie”, originally by the Cranberries, which actually is one of the best I’ve heard for a long time now. The tempo is galloping, but the despair, an the nightmarish atmosphere has remained intact from the original. Special emphasis was given to the melodies, the rich backing vocals, and of course on guitars where the work is superb. Listen to “Can’t Stop”, “Don’t Wanna Die”, “Unnatural High”, “Shoot To Kill”, “L.U.S.T.”, and I am sure you’ll agree with me…
