Three years after their last concert in Greek soil Deep Purpe were back to verify their high value, as well as the people’s trust every time they visit our country. So, this time too Deep Purple managed to amaze with their on stage virtues, the passion, and the energy, which doesn’t look at your age. Surely, if there was someone who stole the show, that was Steve Morse, who didn’t waste no chance to squeeze in a little solo, or a small guitar phrase. It’s obvious that the band is relying on him, as well as admire him on stage for his abilities, as well as his team-playing, stability, and confidence that made them a band again, 15 years ago.
Behind him, there was Don Airey, great as always, sometimes playing less, sometimes more, with his inevitable passage through a Greek old song, to “Mr.Crowley”, which naturally led to “Perfect Strangers”. On his side, he has contributed a lot to the band, being a “silent force”, with his magic hands, and his enormous repertoire (he have played in almost 250 albums after all).
And, what can you say about Glover – Paice? The back bone of the band is always there, pumping iron, more solid than mount Everest, providing the band the space, and freedom to stretch into even a rock’n’roll medley, like the one that caught us by surprise on “Speed King”, with “It’s Now Or Never” (Elvis Presley), -couldn’t figure which one played second!-, and “I Got A Woman” (Ray Charles). As far as Ian Gillan is concerned, you know that we’ll never be objective. He may have been affected by his age, but he is decent, and he never pushes himself to much, while he has his moments. He is the easy target for the disrespectful, but we shouldn’t forget how many screamers owe him paychecks, for leading the way, back in his glory days.
In a nutshell, and being fair, we would say that Deep Purple have a standard, and they never go under it. The can only go over it. This is a result of hard work, world famous musicians’ talent, and stability. This wasn’t their best performance in Greece, but for a band which is 41 years old, that carries so much history, and a legacy that goes with it, it was pretty good. Within the 100 minutes they played three songs from “Rapture Of The Deep”, the exceptional “Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming”, from “Purpendicular”, and surprised everybody with “The Battle Rages On” from the self-titled album from 1993. Of course, they played all the classics, while the highlights included some turbo speed finishes from Ian Paice, a small excerpt of ZZ Top’s “Tush” from Morse, during “Black Night”, and of course the interaction with the crowd.
The truth is that everyone who attends a Deep Purple show never leaves disappointed. You can ask anyone from the seven thousand people (the biggest crowd Deep Purple have pulled to a Greek venue, since 1991) that were there…
