Ostara The Wishing Tree
Ostara
E-a-r Music / Sony - Bmg

Whilst Marillion were preparing the acoustic album “Less Is More”, Steve Rothery, their guitarist, decided to activate an old side project of his, by the name “The Wishing Tree”. (“Carnival Of Souls” was released in 1996).

“Ostara” is not that far away from the sound and the general Marillion style. In this one, Rothery has delegated vocal duties to the exceptional Hannah Stobart. The two of them present a rather interesting British folk approach, in an album consisted of eight remarkable, and well crafted compositions. The rock element is surely more exist-able here, than his previous works, as this magnificent guitarist is doing whatever he is not with Marillion; playing very good solos and missing this “irritating perfection”, regarding his big band’s sound and production. The album’s general feeling is a Floydic idiom, surrounded by a positive to pleasant aura, mainly because of Hannah’s voice and performance, and those are elements that invite a larger audience.

I would chose “Fly”, a very pretty song, which we will meet as a bonus track, along with the album title track, recorded live from the “Marillion Weekend 2009” in Port Zelande, Holland, dated 2-3-2009; plus “Fly” is also featured on video – enhanced).
