It was the first, out of four, gigs in Greece for the Scorpions in their last world tour. It is also their first and last concert in the city of Ioannina. An exceptional opportunity for the city indeed. Thank God it stopped raining, as we feared it would affect the concert; the night opened with Blues People Unlimited, a local band which played for almost thirty minutes, presenting a blues rock setlist, featuring many covers from artists like Gary Moore, Janis Joplin and others that did the trick, and satisfied the audience.
Ten minutes after the end of the set, George Gakis and the Troublemakers launched their exceptional fifty minutes flashback, playing songs the Rock world loves. Plus, they played some songs off their upcoming album. We have written before about what a great singer George Gakis is. So, imagine that he was playing in his “own city” city, as he likes to call Ioannina, where the crowd adores him. The band played really well, the sound was good and songs originally by Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Bon Jovi etc, made the audience scream and shout. I would like to emphasize on the “Another Brick In The Wall” cover, which has to be one of the best I’ve ever listened to. This is a band that has something more to give every time you watch it live. At ten o’clock sharp the Scorpions storm the stage with their brand new “Sting In The Tail”, sending frantic waves to the crowd. Their energy is unbelievable! Especially, Schenker, who’s running up and down the stage. Klaus Meine’s voice shows that time has no effect on it whatsoever. The setlist however is rather predictable. If you are looking for a surprise, that would be the absence of songs like “Always Somewhere” and “When The Smoke Is Going Down”. The first Scorpions period was “represented” by “We 'll Burn The Sky”, while they dedicated “Send Me An Angel” to the great Ronnie James Dio, who has recently departed and the “Dio – Dio – Dio” shouts could cover a volcano erupting! They played this one, as well as “Holiday” on the aisle, very close to the audience, which was ecstatic to say the least…
Kottak did a very impressive drum solo (his entire performance was amazing) whilst the video screens were showing him starring on the Scorpions albums covers (what a splendid idea!). During that part the drum kit was raised above the ground, almost reaching the top of the stage. Quite frankly, this was one of the most enjoyable drum solos I’ve ever seen. I should also not the fireworks during “Blackout” and a massive outro with “Rock You Like A Hurricane” as well as the fact that the band is wearing some of its best costumes for the last ten years.
One of the most popular Rock bands in the planet gave a two-hour long show, and trust me this is a band the arenas of the world will surely miss. I insist that lots of other big bands would envy that energy, even people half their age. I just hope and I know that there is still time for them to change their minds... Dimitris Kazantzis
