I don’t even know the meaning of the “word” 81db. To tell you the truth, I don’t care. Does it change anything that I know the meaning of the words “Iron Maiden”?
I am proud, as a Greek (it’s the first time you read such a comment by me and it maybe the last time, too), that the mastermind of this Italy-based band is a fellow Greek. Do not take this the wrong way, there are many fine Greek musicians, yet this musician is closer to... civilization and with far greater potential, comparing him with the people who live here and struggle to get a decent hour inside a studio. Quartet features guitarist (and not only that) Kostas Ladopoulos, Italian-American William (vocals) and two genuine Azzuri (Vieri – bass and Filippo - Drums).
In a “difficult” scene, where only Lacuna Coil have moved to another level, 81db release their first album, which deserves to be included in the elite of contemporary progressive metal. “Evaluation” is an ideal debut and a grand promise for the future, based on the logic it is set up. The musicians’ quality is a given fact, the band has extremely well comprehended what is missing from today’s rock / metal and gives away something completely theirs. Exceptional, contemporary and totally... “unrefined” production and orchestration, usage of many new instruments regarding the music they play, such as bouzouki, correct album flow changes and the complete understanding of today’s needs in music, concerning the feeling coming out of “Evaluation”.
There are more reasons to take special care of this album. It is a safe sample about the way metal is gonna be heard from now on. It is not coincidental that last year we have had a lot more releases of that kind. I’m sure that if this CD had been released by Dream Theater or Pain Of Salvation, everybody would have spoken about a cornerstone emblematic album, about the musicians’ genius, about amazing songs etc.
I’m not even discussing it whether people looking for new musical paths should acquire that album. People who love alternate music and progressive metal (although I believe fans of “wide” Rock will like the album as well). You might want to check the new incredible video clip on “Voices” over the official band website (www.81db.net) and pray to see them live soon, I heard the best about their live shows!
