Cobra Spell, or else the brainchild of guitarist Sonia Anubis, caught my attention from the first moment, that is from 2020 and their first EP “Love Venom”. Their well-played guitar driven melodic heavy metal with Sonia’s guitar leading the way and Alexx Panza’s voice blending nicely into the whole project gave good signs from the beginning.
In fact, such was Sonia’s dedication that she soon left two big, relative, acts, Burning Witches and Crypta, to invest all her time in her personal band. Hopefully a decision that will fully vindicate her in the end.
“Anthems” is the latest in a series of EPs released by the band. It includes material from previous works but this time with the voice of Kris Vega who has been with the band since 2022. So the compositions are well known if you know the band’s material. Vega does a great job on these songs which already had an excellent vocalist on them. This is also a move that very likely shows Sonia’s intention for the band’s direction from here on out.
The highlight of course is the double version of Flaming Heart, in English and Japanese. I believe the time is approaching for us to hear a full album from Cobra Spell. This is the next step that needs to be taken. Let me remind you that we will see them live at the Rock Hard festival in September.
