D.A.D. releases the 13th studio album of their career which counts 40 years! Not bad at all for the Danes who may be remembered in perpetuity for their classic song “Sleepin’ My Day Away” that was constantly played on MTV but the truth is that they have offered so much more to music. And “Speed of Darkness” may not be destined to shake our world but it is certainly worthy and stands decently next to the good moments of D.A.D’s discography. The question of course is whether it is worth investing one’s money to buy “Speed of Darkness” especially in this time and age where the flurry of releases makes our choices a veritable game of swashbuckling.
The answer to this question is probably negative unless we are talking about die-hard D.A.D. fans who have already bought the album and don’t need to read any review to justify their decision. So the pendulum of decision swings towards the negative decision as, “Speed of Darkness” gets a marginally positive sign but on the other hand it’s nothing special. No, we don’t expect something ground-breaking but we want something that will stand the test of time and will “force” us to put the album in the CD player again (and again) after years. I don’t think that can happen with “Speed of Darkness”. Good songs with the classic influences of AC/DC and Aerosmith but with a dark/melancholic atmosphere that doesn’t really match the style of D.A.D. However, the unchanging voice of Jesper Binzer “raises” the level and really gives extra points to the album.
If you are confused with all the above, I would like to point out once again that “Speed of Darkness” is a good album but I don’t believe that it will be remembered or heard outside of the circle of the hardcore D.A.D. fan base…but then again maybe that’s where Disneyland After Dark themselves are aiming for!
Highlight: Even the obscure cover sleeve adds to the ambiguity of our thought pattern!
