Flames seem to have really kicked things into high gear since their return in 2022 with Resurgence. So, just three years later, we have the follow-up with Frequency Of Illusion. With a stable lineup since 2018, the band seems to be enjoying a second youth.
The sound is familiar. Somewhere between speed and thrash with a few sprinkles of death metal here and there, but without altering their musical identity. Besides, if there was any hesitation, it ceases to exist with the opening track “Hunter,” which is only missing the “Slayeeeeeer” from the fans below the stage. And why shouldn’t Flames show their love for other bands?
At the same time, between serious lyrics, they don’t lose their sense of humor with the excellent “Thrashin’ Beer,” which already has a beloved video clip. Other compositions that caught my attention from the very beginning were “The Arsonist” and “Ornea.” The icing on the cake is the re-recording of “Dressed In Black Suede” from their debut album back in 1985 and “Made In Hell.”
Is “Frequency Of Illusion” an album that will change your worldview of thrash? Definitely not. However, it is an album crafted with passion by a band that stubbornly refuses to throw in the towel and continues unabated. The album is available on CD and various vinyl editions.
