Freeways - True Bearings

Canada has given us so many great bands in all sub genres of rock and as you can listen to the debut album of these guys, there is one more here.

The first thing that you notice when you listen to the album is that Freeways have a little to do with NWOBHM as the press release says. I’d say that it’s a band that gives out a ‘70s odor with an ‘80s attitude. When I listened to the album for the first time what came straight away in my mind was Wishbone Ash. Both Jacob Montgomery’s vocals and the style of most songs brought in my mind the English group. In the just seven songs of the album, they unfold their virtues and abilities to make songs free from limitations and confines, songs that only obey to their creators’ inspiration.

Especially on guitars I get the feeling that the recording of the album was a big jam with the players just playing together, dueling and extending their ideas freely to every angle, true to the spirit of ‘70s classic rockers whose path Freeways follow faithfully.

The production is superb, fresh and modern. The songs that stand out instantly were “Just Survival”, which actually reminded me of the Scorpions, “Battered & Bruised” with its great acoustic passage and the more bluesy “Time Is No Excuse”, which is filled with emotion and a haunting guitar.
