The most important Greek rock guitarist, Giannis Spathas, died today, Saturday July 6th, at 69.
He was born in 1950 in the island of Paxoi and from an early age he was exposed to music playing accordion, guitar and drums. He grew up in Piraeus where with Antonis Tourkogiorgis and Ilias Asvestopoulos (who later formed 2002GR) formed Persons that later became the legendary Socrates Drank The Conium. In 1983 after they disbanded he worked as an arranger and guitarist with the most inmportant Greek artists like Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Chatzidakis, Maria Farantouri, Giannis Markopoulos, Giorgos Dalaras, Charis Alexiou, Manolis Lidakis, Nikos Antypas, Dionisis Savopoulos, Manos Loizos and more. In 1999 he released his solo album “Ta mistika tou dromou” (=secrets of the road).
