In another era and a past decade such a release would have been destined to become a classic by definition as a live album recorded by the most important power metal band in one of the three most historic venues around the world has all the guarantees of something truly great and unique. But even now that live albums no longer have the glamour of the recent or distant past, the essence remains the same and unchanging. What we have in our hands is a fantastic live album! In fact, we’re talking about the most sonically complete live album that Helloween has ever released. Recorded as part of their self-titled comeback album 2022/23 tour, it’s more than certain to evoke memories of the German band’s incredible performances around the globe.
With a set list drawn from every band fan’s wettest dreams – okay, sure, there will be those who will seek out favorites that were not included here but this will always be the case in every single live album by any band, really – Helloween play all their big hits as well as songs from the 2021 album while Kai Hansen’s old school medley takes us back to the early years of the EP and “Walls of Jeriho”. Among the highlights I personally can’t help but include the opening song of the encore, non-other than “Perfect Gentleman”, the amazing rendition of “Best Time” and Deris’ flawless performance of “Power”. Finally, special mention must be made of the crystal-clear production and mix of the album that takes you straight to the heart of Budokan!
The purchase of “Live at Budokan” is not only advisable but according to my criteria absolutely necessary for all fans of melodic metal. It reminded me of other times when live albums had more significance and that in itself says a lot…
Highlight: Needless to say that the accompanying visual section on DVD/Blu-ray is excellent as everything is captured through the lens of 29 (!) cameras.
