It may seem strange to some that High Roller is releasing a pure AOR album, given that it is a label specializing in releases focused on traditional metal. One possible explanation has to do with the fact that the members of Lockhart also play in bands such as Cauldron, Axxion, Goat Horn, and others. Be that as it may, Lockhart is a trio from Canada, and “City Pulse” is their first full-length album following a 2022 EP (“No Chance”). And while the obvious influences can be traced back to giants of the genre like Journey, Foreigner, and Toto, a careful listener will surely pick up on other elements as well.

Personally, Lockhart reminded me of Houston, as the emphasis on keyboards and melodies that hark back directly to the ’80s—while evoking a genuine feeling rather than a cheap imitation of the era— they kept me completely engaged throughout the entire listen. Furthermore, the majority of the songs “hide” traces of the 50s power pop aesthetic, and more specifically that of the Beach Boys, so we’re talking about an explosive compositional mix, to say the least.

I believe Lockhart is worth checking out, as we’re talking about a genre that rarely offers material worth exploring; plus, the fact that the nostalgic vibe of “City Pulse” is accompanied by several original elements definitely earns the Canadians extra points.

Highlight: “City Pulse” also features a satisfying cover of the classic “You Wouldn’t Know Love” (Michael Bolton).
