Lordi’s name will be permanently intertwined with Eurovision and “Hard Rock Hallelujah” but the truth is that this is a prolific band that hasn’t hesitated to experiment and write some very beautiful songs along the way. Their influence, in fact, on the Scandinavian scene is obvious and even Anton Kabanen (Beast in Black/Battle Beast) has made no secret of his admiration for Lordi. “Limited Deadition” is the 19th (!) studio album of the Finns and I dare to say that it marks a return to a compositional form reminiscent of the level of the first three albums.
Once again we travel to Mr. Lordi’s horror show through a satirical mood since that’s what Lordi always did in a truly successful way. Titles like “Skelephant in the Room”, “Killharmonic Orchestra”, “Legends are made of Cliches”, “Hellizabeth” and of course the title track are absolutely indicative of this mood. From a musical standpoint, we are talking about an absolutely classic album by Lordi with anthemic choruses and a hard n’ heavy aesthetic that reminds us of the good old days of the genre while Alice Cooper’s & Accept’s influence cannot pass unnoticed. And all this filtered through an excellent production that further enhances the already catchy songs.
It would be a stretch to ask for a return of Lordi to Greece after the private show they gave at the Underground Club some 20 years ago, but the truth is that I would like to see them one more time and “Limited Deadition” sets the stage for another successful tour from the Finns…why not with a stop in Greece! Lordi’s return is clearly taking a positive mark and personally I wouldn’t ask for anything more from them.
Highlight: Mr. Lordi was (and still is, if you ask me) way ahead of his time…just take a good look at the video-clips of “Would You Love a Monsterman” and Blood Red Sandmand” and you will instantly understand my point…
