This concert could not be missed. With an excellent fourth album in their luggage, “Magna Mater”, Mother Of Millions returning from their European tour played in their home town in an evening that will be remembered as perhaps the best they have given us so far. At least until the next one since you never know how else this band can surprise you.
The concert started with Khirki. The power trio from Athens has managed to make their name heard more and more lately while they recently released their second full-length “Kykeonas”, which succeeded “Ktinodia” from 2021. Their style can’t be easily described as their influences are many and that can only be a good thing, as the guys have created a sound of their own. Personally, they have not managed to win me over musically, with the only exception being the amazing “Sympligades” which I was eager to hear. With great mood and good sound, they came out when Fuzz was still relatively empty and by the time they finished it was almost full (the balcony was closed). The crowd reacted warmly to their songs, culminating in the sing-along to “Medea”. Just before the end they also honored the memory of Paul Di’Anno by covering “Iron Maiden”.
A short break until the stage is ready and Mother Of Millions came out with “Inside”. What should I comment on first? The crystal-clear sound that was like listening to vinyl? The amazing light show that added another dimension to the atmosphere they were creating? The flawless performance of the musicians? How is it that this band impresses you at every show and is even better at the next one? The setlist as expected was based on their latest album, of which they played almost the entirety of it. Their performance was for a seminar, a highlight from start to finish, but for me there were some moments that stood out a little more. The thrilling performance of the doom anthem “Magna Mater”, “Amber” that came right after and of course what happened in the encore. Magic with “Artefact” and closing with “Rome” which they started with the piano version and closed it electrically, with the crowd creating a wonderful scene singing along to them. It’s no coincidence that in all the above cases they had extra help, as four female voices were on stage for some songs. An excellent move by the band, which I hope they will establish in their performances here.
Setlist: Inside, Halo, Orbit, Celestial, Feral, Magna Mater, Amber, Liminal, The Line, Collision, Spiral, Silence, Irae, Artefact, Rome
The night came to an end and I came out of Fuzz impressed. Mother Of Millions gave us an evening that we will remember for a long time. As I wrote at the beginning, definitely their best performance on Athenian soil at the moment since the guys seem to have no limit and manage to give something more every time. If you are a fan of the prog sound and you haven’t seen them, do yourself a favor and go to their next show. Even if you don’t like them, I find it very hard to be unmoved by the soulfulness they put into their performance every time they are on stage. Rise, Evolve.
