MTV announced that “MTV Unplugged” which was very popular in the ‘90s returns this fall. “The conditions are right in 2016 to do it again”, was the channels’ official statement, “the revitalized Unplugged will restore key elements that made the franchise so groundbreaking in the first place, while resetting the show in the multi-platform video world of today.”MTV President Sean Atkins adds: “We’re on a mission to reignite MTV with everything that makes it one of the world’s most iconic brands – its soul of music, its love of pop culture, and its unexpected, groundbreaking creative.” Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album that was released in 1992 boosted the series profile and proved a turning point in the guitarists’ career as he won three Grammy Awards and it sold more than 26 million copies. In 1994 “MTV Unplugged In New York” was the first Nirvana album to be released after Kurt Cobain’s death, selling more than 11 million copies. Finally, note that Scorpions acoustic shows in Athens on September 11 and 12, 2013 took place under the “MTV Unplugged” moniker with the CD/DVD that was released a few months later achieving gold status in Germany.
