How often are we used to see an entire tour roster in our country? Not as much as we’d like, that’s for sure. The fact that this particular one visited us was in itself a big event for death metal fans in general. So, the visit to Fuzz was a must and I don’t think anyone was left unsatisfied with that particular evening.
With few people inside the venue (classic situation for our country), the Finns Horizon Ignited were asked to warm up the crowd and I think they did a very good job. They were founded just five years ago and this year’s second full-length “Towards The Dying Lands” is a very good suggestion for every fan of melodic death metal. With good sound and the driven and communicative Okko Solanterä behind the microphone, they forced the audience into headbanging and at the end they won a warm applause. They did their job and were so happy with the feedback they got, that afterwards said to The Agonist that if the tour ended here, they wouldn’t mind at all.

Follow up with The Agonist. During their show, Fuzz was already starting to fill up and the classic orcs who came late were pushing violently anyone in front of them to get closer to the stage. Fortunately, it wasn’t enough to ruin this for me, as the band from Canada was killing it. I may never have liked their melodic death/metalcore style and there wasn’t any song that impressed me on that Friday night but I can’t help but admit how good they were on stage.
With characteristic ease, chemistry between the members and an attitude of a big band, there is no doubt that we are talking about a well-trained ensemble. A prominent personality, of course, was Vicky Psarakis, with whom the band hit the jack pot. Besides being super excited to play in her country, she was extremely good at what she did with incredible growls and amazing melodic vocals. Overall, a fantastic performance. It’s rare for me to enjoy a band live when I don’t like their music and yet The Agonist did just that. So, I can imagine the feelings of their fans watching them devastate the stage like that. Lots of congratulation for their show.

The wait seemed never-ending. Hypocrisy was on the first places of the never-seen-before list, since the Swedes last visited our country in 2004. Fortunately, the soundcheck didn’t last long and the melodic death masters fronted by the legend Peter Tägtgren came out on stage with the title track of their last excellent album “Worship”. Amazing sound and performance with from the beginning. Not that we expected anything different. In the classic “Eraser” there was a bit of chaos, with the crowd shouting the refrain as loud as possible. Dive into the distant past, almost 30 years back, with “Inferior Devoties” and back to the present with the amazing “Chemical Whore”. The band doesn’t hold back and doesn’t spend time communicating, apart from the classic greetings of course.
The light show is amazing, it gives a special atmosphere to every song. Tägtgren constantly plays between growls and screams. Two beams of light cross over his face giving him a ghostly appearance, he lets out two screams and the mayhem of “War-Path” begins. In “The Final Chapter” he said the epic “Scream for me Greece…and now I will scream for you”. Goosebumps with “Fractured Millennium” and shortly after the end with the iconic “Roswell 47”, just an hour after their show started. So, the only downside in all that Hypocrisy presented us was their time on stage. I don’t know if they finished sooner than expected since the headliners came out earlier than the scheduled start time but there’s no point in thinking about something like this now. What matters is that their fans were present for a flawless performance and we hope they will visit us again soon, but as a first name this time.
Το μόνο μελανό σημείο λοιπόν σε όλο αυτό που μας παρουσίασαν οι Hypocrisy ήταν ο χρόνος τους επί σκηνής. Δεν ξέρω αν τέλειωσαν νωρίτερα από το αναμενόμενο, από τη στιγμή που οι headliners βγήκαν πιο νωρίς από την προγραμματισμένη ώρα έναρξης αλλά δεν έχει νόημα να κάτσω να αναλωθώ σε κάτι τέτοιο τώρα. Αυτό που μετράει είναι ότι οι οπαδοί τους ήταν παρόντες σε μία αψεγάδιαστη παράσταση και ελπίζουμε να μας επισκεφθούν πάλι σύντομα, σαν πρώτο όνομα όμως αυτή τη φορά.

Με το τέλος της εμφάνισης των Hypocrisy συνειδητοποίησα πως πλέον στο Fuzz δεν έπεφτε καρφίτσα αφού είχε γεμίσει ασφυκτικά και κάθε σκέψη για εκ νέου προσέγγιση του bar ξεχάστηκε. Με την ανυπομονησία να χτυπάει κόκκινο, στις μπροστινές σειρές χαζεύαμε τα banners που είχαν στηθεί επί σκηνής για τους τεράστιους Septicflesh. Βέβαια το κενό των 40 λεπτών μέχρι να βγουν (όπως έλεγε το πρόγραμμα) παραήταν μεγάλο, οπότε ήρθε σαν ευχάριστη έκπληξη ότι τα φώτα έσβησαν ένα τέταρτο νωρίτερα και ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή στις 22:15 με την ηχογραφημένη εισαγωγή να προκαλεί ανατριχίλες. Πολλοί ξενερώνουν με τα πολλά προηχογραφημένα αλλά είναι προφανές ότι δεν μπορούν να έχουν μαζί τους μια ολόκληρη συμφωνική ορχήστρα (τι τυχεροί οι Μεξικάνοι) και χωρίς αυτά η μαγεία θα χανόταν.
Στην Ελλάδα πάντως είμαστε τυχεροί που μπορούμε να βλέπουμε τόσο συχνά ένα τεράστιο όνομα της παγκόσμιας extreme σκηνής. Αυτή η εμφάνιση τους ήταν κάπου στη μέση μιας περιοδείας που περιλαμβάνει γύρω στις σαράντα στάσεις, οπότε όλα και όλοι τους δούλευαν σαν καλολαδωμένη μηχανή που ισοπέδωνε τα πάντα με καθηλωτικό συμφωνικό death metal, είτε βουτώντας στα παλιά γνωστά τους κομμάτια, είτε στο φετινό πολύ καλό “Modern Primitive”. Η εναλλαγή μάλιστα των “Neuromancer”, “The Vampire From Nazareth” και “Hierophant” ήταν από τις καλύτερες στιγμές όλης της συναυλίας για εμένα. Και ο βασικός λόγος που κάθε φορά ανεβάζει μια ζωντανή εμφάνιση των Septicflesh από καλή σε πολύ καλή, είναι η παρουσία του Σωτήρη Βαγενά (που δεν είναι δεδομένη κάθε φορά) και τα συγκλονιστικά καθαρά φωνητικά του. Ο κόσμος ήταν ενθουσιασμένος και η μπάντα έδειξε να δίνει πίσω την ανταπόκριση που έπαιρνε με τον άκρως επικοινωνιακό Seth να φουσκώνει από την ενέργεια του κοινού όταν δεν μας μετέφερε στην κόλαση με τα εξωπραγματικά growls του. Με άψογο ήχο και καλό φωτισμό ήταν μια στιβαρή εμφάνιση και όλα κύλησαν ωραία ανεβάζοντας ακόμα πιο ψηλά τις μετοχές τους στην…“Dark Art”.

Πιστεύω ότι μία τέτοια βραδιά απέδειξε ότι θα έπρεπε να βλέπουμε πιο συχνά ολόκληρα πακέτα περιοδείας να περνάνε από τη χώρα μας, αν και καταλαβαίνω απόλυτα ότι πολλές φορές αυτό δεν είναι εφικτό για ευνόητους λόγους. Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι πάντως ότι ο κόσμος που γέμισε το Fuzz πέρασε μία βραδιά που δεν θα ξεχάσει εύκολα και ας μας έμεινε ένα μικρό παράπονο για το πόση ώρα έπαιξαν οι Hypocrisy. Ελπίζω να υπάρξει επόμενη φορά ώστε να πάρουμε μία μεγαλύτερη δόση.
