Do you remember the times when you bought a record and there wasn’t a single filler in it and it didn’t even cross your mind to skip a song? Difficult (or if you prefer, impossible) things in this day and age but The Night Flight Orchestra is one a mission to drive us crazy over the years as every release is characterized by adjectives like “impressive”, “fantastic”, “unprecedented” etc. “Give Us The Moon” is another proof that these guys are second to none out there and the disco rock they play is gathering more and more fans around the world year after year.
Personally, I was a bit skeptical while I was waiting for the Swedes’ new album and the reason for that was simple a but very important one: the untimely death of guitarist, founding member and main composer of the band, David Andersson, created an unfulfilled gap which was not at all evident on “Give Us The Moon” as without exaggeration all the tracks remind of Andersson’s familiar style. Huge credit has to be given to Bjorn Strid who “carries” the whole band on his shoulders and his performance is close to perfection giving you the impression that he is clearly having more fun than his main occupation with Soilwork. The production is excellent as well as the overall performance of The Night Flight Orchestra in the studio and as a result the compositions which have their solid foundations in the period 1978-1982 and in bands like Survivor, Toto but also in the disco rock aesthetics of that period (see Rod Stewart, KISS etc.) “stick” you to the wall at once!
I guess from all the above you can easily understand that here we have definitely one of the best albums of the year…even if it’s only the end of January! The Night Flight Orchestra generously offer us the…moon and we board their plane for a magical flight back in time!
Highlight: The limited edition of the album comes with a flight sleep mask. How cool is that!
