It’s been forty years since the release of “Machine Head” by Deep Purple, the best rock album of all times according to many fans and connoisseurs. This was the cause for this very special release which surprisingly enough finds some of the biggest monsters of today’s rock scene playing a set of classic songs.

Talking about monsters, what’s most impressive about this release is Metallica’s contribution with “When A Blind Man Cries”, a song that wasn’t included on the album, but was released as a B-side of the “Never Before” single. Hetfield and co. did a good job keeping the melancholy of the original intact, as well as the wonderful melody which faced some alterations, as well as an impressive break by the end with Hammet’s guitar on fire, and “When A Blind Man Cries” being finally Metallica-ed. Chickenfoot did also a pretty good job on “Highway Star”, since this wasn’t the first time that Satriani had to play it, as he had replaced Blackmore in Purple back in 1994, and practiced on those famous solos.  As a matter of fact their live version has no big difference than the original. Neither has Kings Of Chaos, which are consisted of Joe Elliot and ex-Guns’n’Roses guys, version of “Never Before”, the song that the band decided to release as the second single off the album, after “Smoke On The Water”.

In general, there is two kinds of covers on the album, the ones where the bands simply plays the song without changing it, and those with some differences from the originals. Bearing that in mind is really refreshing to listen to Luis Maldonado’s almost spontaneous improvisations on “Maybe I’m Leo” with the powerful lead vocals of Glenn Hughes. As well as Black Label Society’s slowed down approach of “Pictures Of Home” that gives the song a more Southern character with the acoustic guitars playing on the background throughout the song.

Glenn Hughes shows off his amazing vocals on another version of “Highway Star” together with the master Steve Vai, and his buddy from  Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chad Smith. This version, especially in the beginning where Vai follows Blackmore’s playing for a bit, makes it very difficult for you to keep your hair on your skin while one of the most notorious songs for breaking speed limits worldwide kicks in. Hughes’ characteristic grain and screams fits the song like a glove, while you are wondering what’s going to happen on the solo. This is where Vai reminds us the “Made In Japan” version of the solo, with two or three guitars layered, and the grand master shredding.

The 8-minute long version of “Lazy” with Joe Bonamassa on guitar, and Jimmy Barnes on vocals lives up to our expectations, but the truth is that the bluesman steals the show, even over the amazing keyboards. And while you are having the fun of your life with this tribute album Flaming Lips’ take on “Smoke On The Water” is a huge spoiler. Their psychedelic style doesn’t fit with the entire project, and it’s definitely the weakest point of the album that actually creates the question why this was included here. Talking about the most classic rock riff of all time, Santana with Paparoach’s Jacoby Shaddix also fail to impress, while neither did Maiden succeed to add something to “Space Truckin” as they just followed the original note for note.

In general, this is a great tribute with the involvement of some of the top names in the business, and with some of those recordings being made exclusively for this album, which pays tribute to a monument of unique inspiration, creativity, and playing dexterity.

Και ενώ όλα πάνε ρολόι και σκέφτεσαι ότι αυτό το tribute είναι από τα καλύτερα έρχεται η διασκευή στο “Smoke On The Water” από τους Flaming Lips να χαλάσει την ωραία εικόνα.
