On some things there is no room for disagreement and doubt, only agreement and common acceptance. One of them is that Jim Peterik’s name will be permanently associated with the words “quality” and “melody”. From the days of Ides of March and Survivor to Pride of Lions and the project World Stage, Peterik has composed timeless songs and melodies that have touched millions of people around the world. And all this without – as we should – paying special attention to the songs he has given to other artists. There was, therefore, no doubt that his new sonic effort would be equally impressive and highly significant, I must add, for the melodic rock genre.

“Roots & Shoots Vol. 1” is a meeting point or if you prefer a crossroads where seasoned and established musicians meet younger and up-and-coming artists. So on the album we meet Kevin Cronin (REO Speedwagon), Don Barnes (38 Special), Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Mark Farner (Grand Funk) but also younger, excellent singers including Peterik’s son Colin. And all of this under the guidance and participation on vocals and guitar by Peterik himself. The first sample of this excellent album was “Dangerous Combination”, a duet between Peterik & Cronin since it’s a track that was released on a Reo Speedwagon album several years ago. All the songs are dominated by a unique sense of melody and lyrics that harken back to other, more…normal and peaceful times, back when people stopped to listen to music rather than having it as a “background noise” behind dozens of other activities. If you ask me, this is Peterik’s real gift to the world: he transports us back in time -more specifically to the 80s- in a very healthy yet nostalgic way.

We said at the beginning of this review that Peterik’s new album is significant for the melodic rock genre. You see, we need the leaders of the respective musical movements to show the way…especially in our time and age. “Roots & Shoots Vol.1” is an excellent, exemplar case of melodic rock sound that is a must listen for everyone who wants melody in their lives.

Highlight. There will, of course, be a second part to “Roots & Shoots”. Can’t wait for it!
