Los Angeles-based gothic metal band…we lived to see that, too! The city that gave birth to most of the greatest rock n’ roll, sleaze and glam outfits provided the backbone of inspiration to a melancholic type of music, too. Well, one cannot retain his/her sentiments, right? You can easily feel moody in L.A….so far, so good.

When you actually slip the c.d. on your c.d. player it is quite evident that the band lacks of a clear musical orientation. What we get with “Melancholia” is more or less extreme metal with male screams and growls enriched with numerous gothic elements that are interpreted by a female vocalist who adds some dark wave traces here and there. The whole thing shows that this is an uneven gothic album. From what I managed to see on the net, September Mourning pays more attention to their graphics and video aspect of the songs. This is really good, but someone should definitely tell these guys that not all gothic music starts and ends with women with black make-up. I really cannot go along with such a mental pattern. In addition, I can’t tell to which audience they are aiming at and judging by the overall mediocre quality of the album, I am sure that they won’t win many fans out there.

However, the guys seem to be quite capable musicians, so I will give them one more chance when their second album hits the stores….until then…
