There are some important changes in the latest effort of the Swedish folk metalers. Nevertheless in essence their music remains the same so if you are interested in their older material “Irrbloss” will draw your attention.

So the new opus is strongly influenced by black metal. The shrieks are morbid compared to what they used to be while the sound is very solid; thick. Moreover the drumming is thunderous (the new drummer proves to be both technical and fast). This time a few traditional instruments can be heard from the background. In the meanwhile the melody, the folk elements, the choirs and the heavy guitar solos make a nice combination with everything mentioned above.

Even if this kind of music sounds long gone by to my ears I acknowledge Yggrdasil’s effort to freshen their sound while remaining consistent with the genre.

My only objection is the annoying “doiiing doiiing doiiing” sound that some of the traditional instruments makes. It’s really nerve wrecking!
