Michael Lang, one of the organizers of the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969 passed away at the age of 77.

His death was caused by a rare form of lymphoma.

Together with John P. Roberts, Joel Rosenman and Artie Kornfeld, Michael Lang inspired the historic 4-day festival that drew 400,000 to Max Yasgur’s now-famous Bethel Farm in New York.

He was just 24 years old in 1969 and in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 2009 he stated: “Woodstock came at a really dark moment in America,” Lang also told Rolling Stone in 2009. “An unpopular war, a government that was unresponsive, lots of human rights issues–things were starting to edge toward violence for people to make their points. And along came Woodstock, which was this moment of hope.”

Following the success of the festival, he founded Just Sunshine Records, reorganized Woodstock in 1994 for its 25th anniversary, and in 1999 for its 30th.
